DC fans have been waiting for March 4, 2022 to happen a lifetime, it seems, since the first trailer for The Batman appeared at DC Fandome 2020. While the arrival of The Dark Knight is front and center, actor Barry Keoghan also has a role in the latest adaptation worth watching.
We explore what Barry Keoghan’s role could be in The Batmanshare a collection of fan art depicting the actor as the Joker and explain why the film received a PG-13 rating, despite DC fans beckoning for an R-rated superhero movie.
With Robert Pattinson, Zoë Kravitz, Paul Dano, Colin Farrell, Andy Serkis and Jeffrey Wright, The Batman It is believed to take place during the childhood of Bruce Wayne’s Revenge Mantle and exists in one of the darkest depictions of Gotham City shown on the big screen.
The role of Batman in Barry Keoghan
Right off the bat, Barry Keoghan was first recognized as a police officer, when the cast list for The Batman gradually announced itself.
Then the role of a Gotham police officer eventually transitioned to “Unseen Arkham Prisoner” over the past few months.
This sudden change has DC fans calling out Warner Bros. for pulling a Marvel trick – a deliberate act of deception whereby certain details are changed or removed from trailers or credited actors for false roles in order to drive fans off the scent.
When Keoghan’s new role became apparent, however, the fandom immediately pointed out the one significant villain who could also double as a Prisoner of Arkham.
The Batman is already jam-packed with classic antagonists from the universe, including The Penguin, Catwoman, The Riddler, and Carmine Falcone. However, one major player has been left out of the list – the Joker – and fans are sure Keoghan will put a smile on his face.
Fan art of Keoghan as the Joker
digital artist, bobby_artshared their very detailed take on Keoghan as the Joker, with the Arkham Asylum suit fitting the actor’s new role.
Popular artist, mizuriau shared his concept art with fans on Instagram, showing Keoghan wearing the classic purple Clown Prince of Crime costume.
Another fan pitched a more subtle take on Keoghan’s Joker transformation and offered the idea of the villain being older than Batman – similar to Todd Phillips’ take in 2019. Joker.
Speaking of Jokermany fans were disappointed with Batman’s tame rating, as the fandom advocates an R rating to honor the darker nature of Matt Reeves’ vision – and Keoghan’s Joker could also benefit from a harsher rating depending on the actor’s abilities in darker roles .
Batman’s PG-13 Rating
It was previously reported that The Batman received a PG-13 rating, despite rumors that the film was aimed at mature viewers.
The rating was issued to adhere to the following: “strong violent and disturbing content, drug-related content, coarse language and some suggestive material”.
The DC fandom pointed out that Batman’s the trailers had advertised a darker tone and relentless violence, more in line with an R rating.
However, Warner Bros. — and other companies releasing superhero features — will likely choose to make these projects geared toward younger fans in order to broaden their audience.
