General Merchants Cafe is temporarily closing a number of Belfast locations to allow staff to rejuvenate



A popular Belfast cafe is set to temporarily close a number of its branches to allow staff to “rejuvenate themselves both physically and mentally”.

General Merchants operate from Ormeau Road, Stranmillis, Forestside, East Belfast and a new kiosk on Donegall Place in Belfast city center.

Speaking to Instagram on Sunday afternoon, the team announced in two posts that a number of their sites would be shutting down for a few weeks.

Their East Belfast site will be closed for two weeks, with a reopening scheduled for Monday, January 24. Their largest site at 361 Ormeau Road will be closed for a week, with a reopening scheduled for Monday, January 17 from 8 a.m.

However, coffee lovers can still get their fix at the General Merchants kiosk on Donegall Place, their Forestside branch, and Cafe 5a on Stranmillis, as all will remain open during this time.

Posting on Instagram, General Merchants said: “To say the last two months have been painful is an understatement. Our amazing staff have time to rejuvenate themselves both physically and mentally. We are also taking this time to refresh our little building at Cabin Park Hill. and improve our outdoor seating area… ..we can’t wait to show it to you!

“We apologize to our devotees for the inconvenience of being closed… time will pass quickly and we implore you to come back and see us, when we are refreshed and ready to serve you all again. We would love to take this opportunity. also to thank you for your continued support, positive energy, love and loyalty.

“We will also CLOSE @generalmerchants 361 Ormeau Road for a week from the end of today. Once again, we apologize for the inconvenience to our loyal customers. We are recharging our batteries again, cleaning up and make some adjustments to our humble cafe.

“Our @generalmerchants City Kiosk, Forestside branch and @ 5acafe will remain open. Many thanks to all of our staff, customers and everyone else. We look forward to coming back and serving you again in 2022. Take care of yourself… ..and each other… ”
