My Facebook fan page has been restricted for “hate speech”

My verified Facebook fan page, with a quarter of a million subscribers, saw its reach limited by the platform to so-called “hate speech“Offenses.

As someone who has been a passionate advocate for those who face discrimination in our society, I am particularly upset but Facebook’s conclusion that I am guilty of perpetuating hate speech, which is defined by the American Library Association like “any form of expression by which speakers intend to defame, humiliate or incite hatred against a group or class of people on the basis of race, religion, skin color, gender identity, gender identity, ethnicity, disability or national origin. “

I, of course, didn’t. Actually all I did was post a few jokes on Facebook, one that mocked the Confederate flag and one that mocked those men who think women were created by God to serve them. Facebook (or its automated algorithms) thought the best thing to do was limit my reach and engagement. This is not the first such interaction I have with Facebook. Last month I posted about how Facebook demonetized my page, limiting the money I make from my supporters. And I’ve had my fair share of bans and suspensions in the past too.

All the while, even when, like now, I disagreed with the decision, I never claimed that Facebook was limiting my freedom of speech. I have argued that it is their right to apply their rules (often arbitrary or contradictory), and that I have the right to take my business and my supporters elsewhere. In this case, I transfer much of my content to Patreon (, where supporters will receive exclusive updates, books and other bonus content for their contributions. If you are not a fan of the monthly subscriptions, you can also support me by purchasing my books, making a one-time donation on PayPal ( or by obtaining an item from my Amazon Wish List (

Despite the fact that Facebook has not violated my free speech, I will be migrating away from this platform for much of my content. In addition to the posts I will post on Patreon, I will also post more often on Instagram and Twitter. You can also subscribe to this blog to make sure you don’t miss any major announcements.

To those who have supported me for the last decade on Facebook, thank you very much! And while I won’t be leaving it completely, Facebook will make sure you see less and less of my posts, so I hope to see you on another platform!

Yours in Reason,

David G. McAfee
