Original Mr. Fantastic Actor Joins Doctor Strange 2 Illuminati in Fan Art

New fan art for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness imagines if Ioan Gruffudd’s Mr. Fantastic joined the Illuminati instead of John Krasinski.

New Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness fan art imagines original Mr. Fantastic actor Ioan Gruffudd as part of the Illuminati team. The 2022 Marvel Cinematic Universe film explored the possibilities of the multiverse with Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange and Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch. One of the key sequences of Doctor Strange 2 profiting from the multiverse came when Strange and America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez) traveled to Earth-838 and encountered the superhero team, the Illuminati. Marvel used it as an opportunity to include massive cameos from former Marvel actors and show variations of others.

VIDEO OF THE DAY

Doctor Strange 2The Illuminati team was led by Patrick Stewart’s Professor X, allowing the x-men returning star but with some elements of X-Men: The Animated Series incorporated into this variation of Charles Xavier. Audiences also saw Hayley Atwell’s Peggy Carter return to the MCU and be Captain Carter, while Lashana Lynch’s Maria Rambeau also appeared as Captain Marvel. The Illuminati team also amazingly presented Inhumans star Anson Mount as Black Bolt. The big surprise, however, was John Krasinski playing Mr. Fantastic for the popular fan casting to come true, even if it was just for a cameo.

New fan art for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness removes John Krasinski from the role of Mr. Fantastic and replaces him with Fantastic 4 Gruffudd star. Art by bobby_art on Instagram imagines a world where Marvel Studios brought back Gruffudd to play Reed Richards in Phase 4. Gruffudd previously played Mr. Fantastic in Fox’s The Fantastic Four franchise, which ended with Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer in 2007. The art ages Gruffudd and puts a bit more gray in his hair, but he remains in the redesigned suit that Krasinski wore.

Although John Krasinski is the internet’s popular choice to play Reed Richards in the MCU, his debut in Doctor Strange 2 turned out to be a bit divisive. Her casting has gotten a little more confusing over time. Krasinski already stood out a little among Doctor Strange 2The Illuminati cast members are the only ones who have never played their character before. Both Gruffudd and Miles Teller previously played Mr. Fantastic outside of the MCU, so either would have made more sense with Marvel’s chosen lineup.

Based on the other characters put together, it would have been fun to see Gruffudd play Mr. Fantastic in Doctor Strange 2. The cameo would have given him a shot at reprising his Marvel role almost exactly 15 years after he last played Reed Richards. However, it’s unknown if Marvel has ever approached Gruffudd to make such an appearance. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness might not have included it, but Gruffudd’s Mr. Fantastic could still join the MCU via Fantastic 4, Avengers: Secret Warsor some other multiverse-related project, perhaps.
