Vader first appeared to the public in 1977 Star Wars: A New Hope as the franchise’s most menacing and recognizable villain. Wearing a mechanical helmet and armed with his red lightsaber, Darth Vader leads the Empire on a ruthless crusade against the Rebel Alliance. Darth Vader’s main villainous role in the star wars the universe transpires throughout the original trilogy after succumbing to the dark side in the prequel trilogy Revenge of the Sith.
As the saga progresses in The Empire Strikes Backa young Luke Skywalker learns that Dark Vader was previously Anakin Skywalker, his father. Anakin’s story is covered throughout the star wars prequel trilogy, which effectively sets up his arc as Darth Vader. As The Original Trilogy Draws Closer Return of the Jedi revolves around, Darth Vader’s reign as Sith Lord comes to an end when he turns against the Empire to save Luke, sacrificing himself in the process.

Through the previous films and the original trilogy, star wars fans have seen much of Darth Vader’s life. And yet, he’s far from gone forever, as Hayden Christensen is set to reprise the role in the upcoming Disney+ series. Obi Wan Kenobi. Although Christensen primarily explored the character of Anakin, he wore the Darth Vader costume a few times towards the end of the prequel trilogy. Christensen even hinted at a future for Vader beyond the Kenobi series, although nothing concrete has been formally revealed.
The story of Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader is synonymous with the classic tale of good versus evil. And while Darth Vader’s role as a villain throughout star wars is legendary, the good within him eventually wins out, allowing his son Luke to see a glimpse of that goodness before Vader’s ultimate demise. Depicting the scene with Anakin’s soul floating around is a nice take on the closure, reminding fans of the star wars frankness and beyond, the good always outweighs the bad.
