Currently, Smith owns 130 Rick Owens pieces, while Luo has 80. Although Luo’s style is sexier, the two sometimes share clothes, including a skirt that Luo bought. They also have the same Bevel Kiss boots with Lucite heels. âThere’s the same guy who recognizes us on the street wearing them,â says Smith.
While they both enjoy the build and the design, they also try not to take it too seriously. âI like over-the-top, cranky figures, but I also need someone to laugh at themselves,â Smith says. “I think Rick is kind of a goofball.” This lightness is what makes Smith so attractive to Luo. âWhile working in the industry, you meet so many people who take themselves seriously,â says Luo. âAt the end of the day, I love clothes so much, but it’s just clothes. There is more to life.
Aside from Rick Owens, Luo still loves Ann Demeulemeester and Comme des Garçons, while Smith has broadened his design palette with Comme des Garçons and Balenciaga. But all is not a success. Luo hates one of his Balenciaga tops, a double-breasted shirt. âIt’s so stupid in a good way,â he says. Despite their differences, the two agree on one thing: âYou have to wear Rick with Rick,â Luo says.
